The Hydretain Difference
Hydretain not only helps avoid negative impacts of underwatering, it also helps plant roots collect and utilize more nutrients.
What can Hydretain be used on?
Improves drought tolerance on all types of plants including lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers. Great for fruit and veggie gardens as well as indoor and outdoor container plants.
How long does an application of Hydretain last?
Unlike wetting agents, an application of Hydretain lasts up to 3 months, providing extended water and costs savings.
Does Hydretain need to be watered into the soil?
Liquid applications that dry on the leaf tissue, mulch or thatch layer will not provide results. Granular applications must be watered-in to activate the product.

Hydretain is available in both liquid and granular options to meet your preferred application style. Both forms have the same active ingredients and will continue to work in the soil for up to 3 months. Liquid Hydretain needs to be watered into the soil right away to drive the active ingredients down to and throughout the root zone where Hydretain is designed to work. Granular Hydretain may be watered-in up to several days after application.
MORE THAN A WETTING AGENT — Hydretain is the only moisture manager that moves moisture through the soil and condenses vapor into water droplets – keeping plants hydrated 2–3x longer between waterings. Unlike wetting agents, surfactants, or absorbent polymer crystals, Hydretain’s patented humectant formula works at the molecular level to capture soil moisture that would otherwise be lost to evaporation, delivering it directly to root systems. The result: healthier plants with dramatically less water.
IMPROVES NUTRIENT UPTAKE & SEED GERMINATION — Properly hydrated root zones absorb more from every fertilizer application. Hydretain improves nutrient uptake efficiency so you get more from the inputs you already use. University of Illinois research confirms Hydretain increases seed germination rates — making it ideal for seeding, sodding, and new lawn establishment even in dry conditions. Great for vegetables and fruit gardens where consistent moisture is critical to yield.
ONE APPLICATION LASTS 3 MONTHS — While standard wetting agents require monthly reapplication, a single Hydretain treatment protects your root zone for a full 90 days. One gallon covers up to 20,000 sq ft of lawn or 4,000 sq ft of gardens. For lawns: apply 9 fl oz per 1,000 sq ft using any hose-end or pump sprayer, then water in with ½ inch of water. For gardens and containers: dilute 2 fl oz per gallon of water and drench to saturate. That is it — one application, three months of protection.
WORKS WHEREVER PLANTS GROW — From lawn and turf to container plants, vegetable gardens, hanging baskets, trees, and shrubs — Hydretain delivers consistent moisture management across every planting type. Trusted by golf courses, municipalities, sports fields, and landscape professionals for decades. The same pro-grade formula is now available for home use. Compatible with all grass types: Kentucky Bluegrass, Tall Fescue, Ryegrass, Bermuda, St. Augustine, Zoysia, Centipede, and Bahia.
DROUGHT & WATERING RESTRICTION READY – Hydretain reduces watering needs, helping lawns and landscapes thrive even under municipal watering ordinances. One application lasts up to 3 months, keeping root zones hydrated between allowed watering days so turf stays green while you stay compliant.
